Urticaria (Hives)

A female patient (30yrs) presented with skin rashes all over the body after her dinner previous night. She reported she had a lamb soup which was cooked with cinnamon and chilli, then she started feeling itchy and rashes rapidly appeared when she was sleeping. She went to see a GP before the acupuncture appointment, and was diagnosed as urticaria and prescribed oral antihistamines.

Before the treatment, I asked her friend to grab the prescribed medication from the pharmacy just in case if the swelling happened in her airway. Her rashes were very itchy on the trunk, arms and legs. Due to the stress might be the underlying factor of her case, I needled on four gate, LI 11, Bai Chong Wuo. Needle retention about 10 ~ 15 mins. When her friend returned, her rashes and itchiness all disappeared. I reminded her she may have recurrent episodes and she needs to watch her diet: avoid spicy, acrid and deep fried foods, and less red meats, also need to ensure good quality of sleep. One week later, she returned and reported the rashes didn't come back after the treatment.

Four Gate (LI 4 and LR 3) is a common combination for release tension and stress.

LI 11 is clear the Empty Heat.

Bai Chong Wuo is a special point to treat acute rashes.

I only used 6 needles on this patient, but each one had their unique role and worked perfectly with each other. This acupuncture prescription not only treated the symptom (rash), but also the root (stress). Consequently, the rash did occur again and this is the beauty of Chinese Medicine. :-)

Please Note: The treatment results varies with different individuals. Patients need to visit qualified Chinese Medicine doctors for professional consultation and treatment.
